Wenlock Olympian Games began in 1850 held in its historic home of Much Wenlock with athletics at the core of the sports events, and this tradition has continued – until now
Since its construction in 2012, Wenlock Olympian Games has held a full day of track competitions for junior and senior athletes on the unique 200m 6 lane outdoor running track situated on the joint use Leisure Centre at the William Brookes School (WBS) campus. During the day the Leisure Centre’s facilities are used by WBS, and out-of-school hours they are for community use – which includes the vast neighbourhood surrounding Much Wenlock.
The principal out-of-school-hours user of the running track is WOS, not only for athletics competitions at the historic annual Wenlock Olympian Games but also for Wenlock Olympians AC – WOS’s athletics club for juniors. The Club welcomes athletes of all abilities aged 8 to 18 years, and currently, having qualified to train athletes with limb disability, the Club’s lead coach is working with a promising young member who runs with a lower leg blade.
Unfortunately, the running track no longer meets UK Athletics’ standard due to surface wear and tear, and in September 2024 it lost TrackMark certification – the quality assurance award to certify that track and field facilities are properly maintained and a safe environment for athletes to use.
So, in partnership with the William Brookes School (WBS), WOS is working to raise £85,500 towards the track’s renovation. Your donation will make a difference.
