THE NORMAN WOOD TROPHY

The Trophy is in the form of a Discobolus – A Discus Thrower in Ancient Greece.

The trophy was donated to the Wenlock Olympian Society by the British Olympic Association, to commemorate the contribution made by Norman Wood in resurrecting the Wenlock Olympian Society and the Wenlock Olympian Games, after a period of inactivity, and taking it forward during his life time. It was presented to Roy Rogers, the then President of the Society, by Jonathan Edwards, the now President of the Society, when the 2012 Olympic Roadshow came to Much Wenlock in 2006. The presentation took place in Holy Trinity Church along side the memorial to William Penny Brookes.

It is presented annually to the individual who has made a significant contribution to the operation and success of the Arts and Sports sections of the Wenlock Olympian Games. A Recipients Trophy is also presented as a permanent memento for receiving the Trophy. Members of the Society may nominate an individual by completing a Nomination Form – Norman Wood Trophy Nomination Form – and sending it to the Selection Committee Co-ordinator.

The Selection Committee comprises of:

         – The Present Chairperson of the Society.
         – The holder from the previous year.
         – A Member of the Society nominated to act as the Norman Wood Trophy Co-ordinator. (Currently Mac Bardsley)

The Selection Committee Co-ordinator is responsible for:
      1. Processing the Nomination Forms.
      2. Arranging a Selection Meeting for the Committee
      3. Having the successful nominees’ details engraved on the Trophy.
      4. Arranging purchase and engraving of the Recipients Trophy

The Trophies are to be presented at the AGM.
